Thursday May 8, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Friday May 9, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Saturday May 10, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
In this workshop, teachers will learn to scaffold English language learning through personal literacies and children’s literature. Classroom strategies will be introduced through modeling and hands-on activities. Participants will become familiar with best practices in language teaching, including using autobiographical writing, culturally relevant stories and children's literature in the language learning curriculum, incorporating technology including wikis and blogs, and creating authentic, communicative, culturally responsive learning activities to better engage students in learning English.
A significant outcome of the workshop will be the development of a self-sustaining virtual community of English teachers in Cuenca, Ecuador and undergraduate and graduate students in the Bilingual Education Program at Chicago State University, Chicago, Illinois, US through the wiki: [[.|http://tesolinteramericanos.wikispaces.com/.]] In this cross-cultural wiki project, pre- and in-service teachers in both North and South America will construct a collaborative virtual space for knowledge-building about literacy and language teaching practices, resources and issues.
This workshop is designed to serve English language arts teachers, dual language teachers, students preparing to be teachers, and community organization language program facilitators and teachers.
